An innovative new scheme involving a multi-partnership approach will see job seekers training for jobs in the NHS. Contract lead for The Key and Access to Employment, Nina Dixon explains more.

Bay Health & Care Partners, who are made up of eight NHS organisations and two county councils, are looking to support unemployed people become work ready for an array of roles in the NHS from laboratory assistants to porters and kitchen staff.

This innovative pilot scheme will start in 2018 with Bay Health & Care Partners, Inspira, Lancaster and Morecambe College, Jobcentre Plus and Lancashire County Council all joining forces.

It will begin with an open day in January at the Lancaster Jobcentre Plus as the start of the selection process. The pilot will start with 12 places.

With an initial assessment by Inspira followed by an employability skills programme, the successful applicants will participate in a series of workshops to help them understand the world of work within the NHS, experience mock interviews, presentation skills, team work and confidence building. Inspira will also help in applying for DBS checks. Following the employability skills programme, the participants will go onto an accredited course by Lancaster and Morecambe College focusing on the specific NHS roles the participants are interested in, which includes work placement in the appropriate departments.

It will be a proper post and they will be fully supported throughout by Inspira, the Bay Health & Care partners team and college tutors. The hope is then the participants will be able to apply for jobs in the NHS. Most of the jobs available are non-clinical so after the training they should be able and ready to apply for those positions.
