Deborah's NCS journey leads to life changing careers advice

Deborah Beckett first heard of NCS (National Citizen Service) at a school assembly presented by Stevie Batey, an NCS Coordinator with Inspira. Deborah didn't give the programme much more thought as none of her friends were interested – but the seed was planted!

A few months later, Deborah attended the Inspira 'Progression Event' where Stevie was again promoting NCS. This time Deborah started to think that maybe she could sign up by herself after all as the programme promoted 'new friendships.' Deborah signed up that evening.

Deborah hit it off straight away with everyone at the 'Meet the Team' event. In fact, after the session, they all headed off to a local park to continue their new friendships.

Deborah's favourite part of the NCS program was the outdoor activities, especially ghyll scrambling and the army activity carousel. She also really enjoyed the Social Action planning, where Deborah's team 'Baby Bonanza' raised money and starter packs for 'The Happy Mums Foundation.'

"My new friends on NCS were accepting and friendly," said Deborah. "I realised that I could be myself, and by not being judged by anyone - I became more independent and confident."

During the NCS Graduation Louise Latta, Wave Leader and Skills & Development Adviser for Inspira spoke about further career advice and guidance. Deborah took this offer up, and Louise has helped Deborah with her CV and further career advice.

"I found NCS really helpful," said Deborah. "I have discovered other services that Inspira offers, which led to guidance with my Curriculum Vitae."
