How to Make a Positive First Impression
Interviews can feel nerve-racking, but a little preparation goes a long way. Knowing how to present yourself clearly and confidently can make all the difference.
Our advisers at Inspira have pulled together these simple but effective tips to help you make a great impression and avoid common mistakes.
✔ Use open body language
Keep your hands relaxed in your lap with your palms facing slightly upwards. This shows openness and honesty. Avoid clenching your fists or using overly dramatic gestures, which can appear nervous or unpredictable.
✔ Mirror positive behaviour
Subtly matching the tone and body language of your interviewer can help build a connection. This does not mean copying them exactly, just stay in tune with their energy and style.
✔ Smile and show interest
A warm smile and a few well timed nods help show that you are engaged, friendly and paying attention. Interviews are not just about qualifications, they are also about personality.
✔ Maintain natural eye contact
Too little eye contact may seem like you are unsure or disinterested, while too much can feel intense. Aim for natural, friendly eye contact as if you are having a comfortable conversation with someone you respect.
✘ Touch your face
Avoid playing with your hair or touching your face during the interview. It can be distracting and may unintentionally give the impression of nervousness or dishonesty.
✘ Fidget or shift around
Jiggling your leg, tapping your fingers or constantly shifting in your seat can be a sign of boredom or impatience. Try to keep both feet flat on the floor and sit upright. This will help you stay grounded and focused.
✘ Slouch or sprawl
Sitting hunched forward or leaning too far back with your arms stretched out can come across as too casual. Good posture shows that you are alert, respectful and ready to engage.
Remember, an interview is as much about you finding the right fit as it is about the employer choosing the right person. Stay calm, be yourself and prepare well, and if you need extra help, Inspira is here to support you.
