When Joshua first sought support, he was facing significant barriers to employment. At 20 years old, he had been unemployed for over a year, was not in education or training, and had only a small amount of work experience from a brief role at Carlisle United when he was 16. His confidence was extremely low, and even everyday activities such as leaving the house or socialising felt overwhelming due to long‑standing social anxiety. The prospect of joining the workforce seemed unattainable to him.
Encouraged by those close to him, Joshua nervously approached Inspira. He hoped for basic job‑searching advice and support to create a competent CV. His sessions were tailored to his needs, and he received guidance on writing CVs and cover letters, understanding what employers expect, and how to begin searching for suitable roles. This initial support gave him the foundation he needed to consider taking his first steps into employment.
Following an assessment, Joshua was referred to the Civil Service Recruitment Swap programme delivered by Inspira and Pro-Tect Training. The Inspira sessions helped him identify his soft and hard skills, tailor applications to job descriptions, and understand the expectations of administrative roles. The training with Pro-Tect expanded on the core principles of business administration, but despite his anxiety, Joshua attended each day, steadily building skills, confidence, and establishing a routine. He later described this period as the first time he could “see a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Recognising that Joshua had never attended an interview before, his adviser arranged a mock interview with another colleague. Joshua performed strongly, receiving detailed and valuable feedback that boosted his confidence for future opportunities.
Alongside this, he received coaching on the Civil Service recruitment process, including navigating the Civil Service Jobs website, understanding job profiles, and using the STAR method of answering interview questions to demonstrate competency. He also practised customer service and situational judgement tests to prepare for future applications.
Joshua went on to complete a Level 2 qualification in Principles of Business Administration, followed by a two‑week work placement at Carlisle Jobcentre Plus. This placement allowed him to apply his new skills in a real working environment without the pressure of a permanent role.
He enjoyed the routine, the teamwork, and the chance to learn new skills, so much so that he felt genuinely sad when the placement ended. He later described it as “the final piece of the puzzle” in helping him feel ready for employment.

Using the confidence and skills he had gained, Joshua applied for an Administrative Officer role with the Animal and Plant Health Agency via Brook Street Agency. On 18 December, he interviewed for the position and was successful, securing a three‑month contract starting in January 2026, with the potential for extension.
In reflection Joshua shared that his confidence, both in daily life and in approaching employment has improved dramatically. He now leaves the house more regularly, maintains a consistent routine, and feels secure in his abilities for the first time. He describes himself as feeling “like a totally different person” compared to where he was a year ago.
Joshua’s progress demonstrates the transformative impact of personalised careers guidance, structured training, and empathetic support. From being overwhelmed by anxiety to securing his first substantial role, his transition highlights how tailored interventions can empower young people to overcome barriers and move confidently into employment.
"I feel like a totally different person. My confidence and my skills have grown to a level I'd consider unrecognisable from the person I was a few months ago, and rather than feeling out of sync with that image, I feel I embody it properly. The support I've received has been invaluable, and I wouldn't even know where to start to repay all I've gained from it."
