19th February 2020

Four pupils from Parklands School in Chorley have their sights set on winning a prestigious award at the Safety Groups UK Health and Safety Awards at the Gladstone Library in London on Monday the 24th of February.

The Year 9 students are being awarded a highly commended in the innovation category and are also finalists in the Development Through Education category.

Talya Arda, Myles Heaton-Smith, Rebecca Walker and Jack Dickens created a humorous video demonstrating how to advance health and safety at work through education. To create their video, they researched health and safety in the workplace and visited several businesses to give the research context.

Mr Taffs works with the school through the Careers and Enterprise Company’s Enterprise Adviser Network, which is delivered in Lancashire by Inspira on behalf of the Lancashire Skills Hub. The Network is designed to connect schools, academies and colleges with local employers and careers programme providers to create inspirational and meaningful encounters for young people within the world of work.

“I am thrilled they have been nominated for this prestigious award. This young group have beaten tough competition from major and national established businesses with all the resources at their disposal.”

“I have really enjoyed completing this project as it has given me fantastic life skills that I will be able to use in my career.”

- Rebecca Walker, speaking on behalf of the four students.

The group of students agreed that something entertaining was the best way to get the serious message across. Inspired by this, they have continued their work producing a video on stress and mental health in the workplace and are currently undertaking a further piece of work looking at road safety.

“It has been a great and entertaining project and has had a positive educational impact on me that I will remember forever.”
