The Health and Wellbeing course in Whitehaven brought together individuals looking to build confidence, improve their wellbeing, and take steps toward positive change. This case study shares the stories of two participants, Mark and Andrew, and the progress they made with the support of Inspira.
Background: Before the Course Mark had previously taken part in several other courses delivered by Inspira and Cumberland Council, demonstrating a strong interest in personal development. Although he had some volunteering experience, his progress was limited by significant social anxiety. Mark found it extremely difficult to speak to others, often withdrawing when situations felt overwhelming. One‑to‑one interactions were challenging, and he avoided group discussions entirely. His reluctance to step outside his comfort zone made it hard for him to grow socially and emotionally.
Motivation for Joining: Despite these challenges, Mark was determined to build his confidence and continue learning. He enjoys gaining new knowledge and saw the Health and Wellbeing course as a safe and supportive opportunity to take a positive step forward.
Support from Inspira: Throughout the course, Mark received personalised support. The tutor played a key role in helping him feel included and valued. When he struggled to speak, he was encouraged gently and given the time he needed to express himself. He was never interrupted or spoken over, which helped him feel respected and listened to. From the very beginning, the Inspira team created a safe, welcoming environment where Mark felt comfortable asking for help and participating at his own pace.
Challenges Overcome: One of Mark’s biggest achievements was speaking in front of the group several times, something he had previously believed he could never do. This was a significant breakthrough in his confidence and social engagement.
Impact on Wellbeing: Mark recognises that he still has progress to make, but he feels proud of how far he has come. The supportive atmosphere helped him feel safe, relaxed, and happy while learning, which had a positive impact on his overall wellbeing.
Future Goals: Mark hopes to continue building his communication skills, keep learning new things, and eventually secure a volunteer placement where he can apply his growing confidence.
Would He Recommend the Course? Yes. Mark would recommend the Health and Wellbeing course to others, especially those who struggle with confidence or social interaction.
Background Before the Course: Andrew was unemployed and didn’t feel ready to return to work. He was experiencing depression and frequent anxiety attacks, which made it difficult for him to leave his home. These challenges had a major impact on his confidence and ability to engage with everyday life.
Motivation for Joining: Andrew joined the course to build resilience and gain a better understanding of his mental and physical health. He wanted to learn strategies to manage his wellbeing and prepare himself for future employment.
Support from Inspira: The Inspira team provided Andrew with a highly supportive and understanding environment. He was given the time and space he needed to participate comfortably, and staff ensured he felt heard and respected. This approach helped him build trust and progress at a pace that felt manageable.
Challenges Overcome: Despite his anxiety, and occasional uncertainty about attending, Andrew achieved 100% attendance, which he described as a major personal achievement. He also shared that he usually needed to step outside during difficult topics, but during this course he managed to stay for the full duration each day. One of his most significant accomplishments was speaking openly and confidently about his mental and physical health in front of the group, overcoming his usual tendency to withdraw.
Skills Gained: Andrew developed greater self‑awareness, learning to recognise his health limitations and how to navigate the job search process while appropriately disclosing them. He gained insight into healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms for stress and learned practical tools to build resilience and maintain his wellbeing during challenging times.
Impact on Confidence and Wellbeing: The course had a positive impact on Andrew’s confidence and outlook. He now feels more hopeful about the future and plans to begin job searching and use his gym pass to support both his physical and mental health.
Would He Recommend the Course? Yes. Andrew would recommend the course to others facing similar challenges, as it provided him with the support, skills, and confidence needed to move forward with a more positive mindset
