Uncertainty to opportunity: Paul’s journey back to work

CV

Paul, aged 50, approached Inspira for employability support after nine months of unemployment. Despite having a strong and extensive background in the IT sector, he was struggling to re-enter the workforce and felt uncertain about the reasons behind this.

In addition to his professional challenges, Paul had faced several major personal setbacks, including losing his home, an experience that deeply affected his confidence and overall wellbeing. Faced with limited options in his previous field, he began exploring a fresh start and a new career path.

To support this transition, Paul worked closely with his adviser to update his CV, ensuring it better reflected his technical skills and experience in IT. Together, they explored his transferable skills, personal interests, and potential new career directions.

Through these sessions, Paul discovered a strong interest in driving and operating large machinery. His adviser introduced him to free local training opportunities, and Paul enrolled in a Telescopic Handler bootcamp offered by SB Skills, embracing the chance to gain hands-on experience and industry-recognised certifications.

With continued support, Paul created tailored CVs for both IT and construction-related roles, broadening his employment prospects. His motivation to return to work was clear, he proactively asked to be considered for any available opportunities.

Soon after, Paul was referred to a recruitment event at Blackpool Pleasure Beach for a temporary role as a Ride Operator. The position suited both his interest in machinery and strong people skills; following an interview, he successfully secured the job.

While working in this role, Paul continued to apply for longer-term employment. His persistence paid off when he was offered a permanent position with Blackpool Transport as a Conductor, with clear progression opportunities to train as a driver, something that matched his goals and interests.

Paul is thriving in his new role, enjoying the day-to-day responsibilities, and looking forward to future development. He has remained in regular contact with his adviser through In Work Support and now has a much more positive outlook both professionally and personally, as he continues to rebuild and move forward.
